Investigating and Civilly Prosecuting Cyber Crimes
Alexander Urbelis, a partner in the Blackstone Law Group llp in New York, is an attorney who focuses on information security, technology-related law and investigations, and has also been part of the infosec community for more than 20 years.
Based in New York, London, and Geneva, Alex was the Chief Compliance Officer of one of the world’s largest luxury conglomerates. As such, Alex handled all aspects of worldwide legal compliance, including anti-bribery and anti-corruption efforts, whistle-blowing matters, internal and external investigations, and ensured that employees and partners understood and adhered to strict standards of business conduct. Prior to his role as CCO, Alex was in-house information security counsel, charged with responsibility for mitigating information security risk, managing investigations, and developing offensive and defensive policies and procedures.
Alex’s federal service includes working for Office of General Counsel of the Central Intelligence Agency, the US Army JAG Corps, and as a Research Associate in the Technical Analysis Group of Dartmouth College’s Institute for Security Technology Studies, a national center for information security and counterterrorism research and analysis. Alex also served as a judicial law clerk to Chief Judge Effron of the US Court of Appeals for the Armed Forces, and as a judicial extern to Justice Denise Johnson of the Vermont Supreme Court.
In recognition of his technical and legal acumen, Alex was recently selected as a Member of the UL (Underwriters Laboratories) Security Council for the 2017 – 2020 term. In addition, Alex was elected to the Board of Directors of the Internet Society NY Chapter for the 2018-2019 term.
Alex is a frequent media commentator on television and radio on the subjects of privacy and security, and his writing has appeared on CNN, The Intercept, 2600 Magazine – The Hacker Quarterly, law reviews, and bar journals.
Alex holds a BA, summa cum laude, in Philosophy from Stony Brook University, a JD, magna cum laude, from Vermont Law School, and the BCL from New College, Oxford University.
Alex is a Subject Matter Expert (SME) on investigating and civilly prosecuting cyber-frauds, cyber-defamation, cyber-harassment, cyber-extortion and other related crimes.
Alex is General Counsel of the Fraternal Order of Investigators.
